UCLA Anderson Gets $11M For New Technology Center

UCLA's Anderson School of Business has launched a new research center, called the Easton Technology Management Center , thanks to an $11M gift from James L. According to UCLA, the new center will focus on innovative research and scholarship in technology management, and will broaden the base of technology opportunities across the UCLA campus. Easton, who helped establish the Easton Technology Leadership Program at UCLA in 2009, has a background in engineering from UCLA.

Solarmer Ups Solar Efficiency

Solarmer develops flexible, plastic-based solar cells, and is based on technology spun out of UCLA. Los Angeles-based Solarmer Energy , a developer of plastic solar panels, said Thursday that it has upped its solar efficiency, to 7.6%. The firm said the efficiency breaks the world record for plastic solar cell efficiency. The firm had previously reported a 6.77 percent efficiency in its cells.

Solarmer is a spinout of UCLA, and is applying its photovoltaic technology to create solar power panels which can be incorporated into fabrics, for consumer electronics, and other applications where flexible panels overcome limitations of existing technology. El Monte-based Solarmer Energy , which is developing flexible solar power technology, has raised $4.3M in an equity funding round, according to a filing by the firm today. Source of the new funding for the company was not disclosed.

Aragon Pharmaceuticals Gets $8M

Aragon's technology comes from research developed at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and UCLA. La Jolla-based Aragon Pharmaceuticals reported Wednesday that it has raised $8M in a Series A financing. The firm, which is focused on small molecule therapeutics for treating hormone-resistant cancers, said that the financing was led by The Column Group and OrbiMed Advisors. The company said it is initially focused on prostate and breast cancer.

Texas Incubator Lures Away LA Startup

The person-to-person marketplace was started by a number of UCLA undergraduates. Capital Factory , a business incubation program based in Austin, Texas, has lured away a Los Angeles startup, Homstie , which operates an online marketplace which helps people find places to store their stuff. According to Capital Factory, the firm was one of five companies to receive $20,000 in funding and an additional $20,000 in services; as a result of the funding, the startup is moving to Austin.
