San Diego Innovation Economy Extended Gains in 2015: Connect Report

The Connect Innovation Report found that 405 software, technology, and life sciences startups were created last year in San Diego County. Software startups made up nearly 63 percent (255 companies created) of all new high-tech ventures created in 2015, a trend fueled chiefly by software app development, according to the report.

Not long after ViaSat (NASDAQ: VSAT ) acquired San Diego-based LonoCloud in 2013 , former LonoCloud executives Tom Caldwell and Hossein Eslambolchi met for coffee at the Specialty’s Café and Bakery in University City. Webroot also plans to expand in San Diego, and Caldwell said he plans to stay on.

San Diego-based startup EcoATM , the developer of automated kiosks used for recycling cell phones and other electronics, has been acquired by newly renamed Coinstar (now known as Outerwall). EcoATM had only launched its automated kiosks in 2010, and was a winner of the San Diego Venture Group''s Pitchfest in 2009.
