These things are clearly good for morale, but its not so clear that they translate into a competitive advantage. HR leaders are your culture coaches, and responsible for aligning managers and employees with the desired culture. Getting those key people, including hiring, training, and coaching takes a long time to accomplish.

I had realized that I didn’t have it within me to be as good of a player as many of them did but I had the skills to help as mentor, coach, friend, sparing partner and patient capital provider. It was a way to make it hard for your competition to compete. Ask Xi or Putin how that’s going for them. Valuations were a measure of success.

I found some good guidance on this subject in a new book, “ The Leader You Want To Be ,” by Amy Jen Su, a managing partner in an executive coaching and leadership development firm. I get much more satisfaction, and can provide more realistic help, in steering you through specific pricing, organizational, or competitive challenges you face.
