Bird Expands Into Bike Share

Los Angeles-based Bird says it is expanding into the bicycle sharing market, unveiling a new electric bicycle and a program to support what it calls "multimodal" cities. According to Bird, its new Bird Bike is designed for longer, 3-5 mile trips, and are equipped with a high-powered motor capable of handling hills with up to a 20% grade. Bird--led by founder and CEO Travis VanderZanden--says it plans to start rolling out the shared Bird Bike across North America and Europe this year.

Ring Tightens Privacy Over Law Enforcement Requests

Santa Monica, California-based Ring, which is part of Amazon, is significantly tightening how it shares videos from its users with law enforcement, in a move which should please privacy advocates. According to Ring, it will change it will now require a valid case number and department contact information on requests, with specific law enforcement requests coming through Ring's Neighbors app, meaning that Ring users in the US will not receive direct emails from police and fire departments.

Kofax Acquires PSIGEN

Irvine-based document automation systems provider Kofax said this week that it has acquired PSIGEN Software, a developer of document capture, content management and workflow automation software. Financial details of the transaction were not announced. According to Kofax, the deal will add to its existing document capture software and solutions. PSIGEN's flagship software is PSIcapture, used for document capture in such areas as quote-to-cash, accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Fisker Links With Foxconn On New EV

Los Angeles-based electric vehicle developer Fisker and electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn are in a new deal to develop a new, electric vehicle, the two said on Wednesday. According to Hon Hai Technology Group, the parent company of Foxconn, and Fisker, they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a global electric vehicle project. Irvine-based YouMail , which develops alternative voicemail and robocall blocking software, says it is providing its services to Republic Wireless , with a new, opt-in call blocking service. Financial details on the deal with Republic Wireless were not announced. YouMail's software--which works in conjunction with a user's phone carrier and both Android and iOS applications--has recently focused in on blocking robotcalls, in addition to offering up an enhanced voicemail service.

Costa Mesa-based Givsum , which develops online software to help charitable organizations with their operations and fundraising, says it has received both new funding, as well as support, from two accelerators.
