This blog post originally appeared in serialized form here on TechCrunch. I recently spoke at Caltech at the Caltech / MIT Enterprise Forum on “the future of socialnetworking,&# the 30-minute video is here and the PowerPoint presentation is here on DocStoc ). And so it goes with socialnetworking.
Turns out everybody likes to produce content and take part in the “conversation.&# Massive uptake of user-generated content including blogs (e.g. People rightly recognize that comments on blogs are just a form of a stream and thus the growth of open commenting platforms like Disqus and IntenseDebate. Then came blogs.
Commenting on topical blogs is a form of topical socialnetworking in the same way that Quora is. It’s a highly engaged audience and the content generated from many of the blogs (not all) are highly valuable. If you use any standard commenting system on your blog or website you’re sub-optimizing engagement.
On the other hand, you might blog your answers and post a link. Her other suggestions around blogging, LinkedIn, twitter use pretty well align with how I think about it. Tom Humbarger had some great suggestions in his post Visible Networking with Tony Karrer – Los Angeles Social Media Starters. It's important.
Even when I’m not the one being sued I find myself being dragged into deposition after deposition and my blog (along with all my emails) are being served as evidence. Most ideas are fungible. If you think Facebook, WhatsApp, Google Search, AirBNB, etc are totally “novel” ideas you’re kidding yourself.

As highlighted in the movie The SocialNetwork , the Winklevoss brothers are embroiled in a protracted lawsuit with Mark Zuckerberg, Founder of Facebook. They claim that Mr. Zuckerberg “stole” their idea of creating a socialnetwork for the Harvard student community. My corresponding response is shown below.
A lot of the feedback we got from those users was that community was a killer, we love these communities, can we put them on our own site, on our own blog, can we skin the community so that it's in our own look and feel, and can we put all these features on our own site. The common term for this is networking, but I find that many aspiring entrepreneurs like to do all the talking about their latest new idea and fail to listen. Reserve some time each day for your favorite blogs and influencers, follow up with socialnetworking and expand your personal contacts offline.
That doesn’t mean you have to be a social butterfly to succeed, or introverts need not apply. What these people need is more relationships, not more experts, more blogs, or more books. Don’t skip all business social settings. Face time is critical, even with the current rage on socialnetworks, phone texting, and email.
Then I get people sending me Twitter comments, blog comments and tons & tons of email intros. Why isn’t it a good idea to rush the stage after a presentation? If you can’t figure out how to get access to somebody in the era of socialnetworking then you’re likely not going to be a successful entrepreneur.
Nevertheless, if you share too much in your funding process or meet too many VCs expect a certain amount of your ideas to spread around the startup community. I first discovered it from Dharmesh Shah’s blog OnStartups. Swipely is a socialnetwork orientated around users credit card transaction data.
