I admire John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach. When we started our company, we were totally driven by the notion of excellence in execution. He spent the first day of practice each year teaching his team how to put its socks on properly. Wooden’s reasoning? Wooden’s emphasis on excellent execution resonates for me.

We are a technology company, not an ad agency, and we are really just a bunch of nerds who believe we can turn this thing upside down, and let people try those apps out before downloading. I got super, super fortunate that early in my career, I was living with an entrepreneur, Randy Saaf, who was running a company called MediaDefender.

Investors are very focused on diligence, on business models that make sense, and those companies that have a definite competitive advantage and defensibility to what they're doing. We're looking for inventors interested in commercializing and spinning out their technology into a company. Universities have a bunch of companies on either side that have done that. If an existing company is not interested in licensing, and a researcher is not an entrepreneurial spirit, those projects go no where.
