Comparably Snags eHarmony Vet As CMO

Santa Monica-based Comparably , the startup which helps employees and employers track compensation and company culture data, has snagged a high profile hire this morning, hiring on eHarmony veteran Armen Avedissian as its new Chief Marketing Officer. Comparably--which is led by serial entrepreneur Jason Nazar--offersup an online salary comparison site which also helps companies to find candidates for jobs, among other services.

eHarmony In Advertising Push, As Warren Revamps Firm

Santa Monica-based online matchmaking site eHarmony is planning a big advertising push, as the firm said it has revamped its management team under founder Dr. Neil Clark Warren. According to eHarmony, it is launching a brand new, marketing and television campaign which will feature Dr. Warren in what it says are "new, humorous situations." The move comes as eHarmony says it has been working to refresh and revamp its experience and drive users to return to the service.

Because I was the Acting CTO for eHarmony at it's start, I quite often get introduced to people who have an idea for a startup company that is based on some kind of matching algorithm. They describe the company as the eHarmony of careers, clothes, jobs, college, tutoring services, doctors, service companies, investments, etc. In fact, you can get a good idea of these various things by just searching on Google for "eHarmony of" startup.

I had to laugh when an analyst with Forrester said in the article - As impressive as these results may be, myShape’s approach will probably fail to gain a mass audience unless the company can somehow simplify the measuring process, said Sucharita Mulpuru, an analyst with Forrester Research. Having worked on eHarmony where the intake is 2 hours and was completely counter to the prevailing trend, I think the analyst missed the point.

However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models.
