XPRIZE Names Two Winners In Carbon XPRIZE Competition, Including LA Startup

Los Angeles-based XPRIZE says it has named two winners in its $20M, NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition. The competition challenged teams to convert CO2 emissions into valuable products. According to XPRIZE, it has awarded two companies--CarbonCure Technologies and CarbonBuilt, both working on ways to decarbonize concrete. CarbonCure Technologies, the Alberta track winner from Canada, demonstrated a technology which enabled the production of concrete with a reduced water and carbon footprint without sacrifice to the material’s reliability. CarbonCure Technologies has already raised venture funding from Bill Gates' fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Amazon Climate Pledge Fund, BDC Capital and others. The other winner, CarbonBuilt is based in Los Angeles, developed technology that reduces the carbon footprint of concrete by more than 50 percent while reducing raw material costs and increasing profitability. CarbonBuilt's technology was originally developed at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.
