I was impressed by a recent book, “ The Leadership Star ,” by Brian Hartzer, an experienced business executive, offering a concise leadership framework that I believe embodies the key attributes that I recommend. Of course, finding personal meaning also requires effort on the part of your employees.

It is a hugely compelling show because Zakaria covers world issues that will affect all of us in ways that are accessible and with frameworks for processing disparate information. I was watching my favorite show on TV this morning – GPS (Global Public Square) with Fareed Zakaria. I often find myself having the opposite reaction.

If you’re a technology startup you need to excel at product, of course. The starting point of product IS marketing, which is what a lot of young entrepreneurs that never studied business don’t realize. Of course once submitted you could send out links to your friends and ask them to upvote your content and that would help.

I told people privately my perfect spec: computer science undergrad from MIT (or any other great school), 2-years at McKinsey but no more than that (I love the analytical framework that the top strategy consulting firms provide. If you had a non-business undergrad and want to study for a master’s in business – go for it!

McKinsey had their “ 7S framework &# and BCG had the “ BCG Matrix &# with cash cows, dogs, stars and question marks. And of course there was the Michael Porter’s “ 5 Forces.&# Frankly, I kind of found all of this stuff to be bullshit (bull shiitake?) But tell me how practical is the 7s’s, really?

We removed all of the features and bloat that plagues other forum software, and created an addon framework so the forum owner can use Vanilla as the basis on which they can build their vision of how their community should appear and function. Vanilla is forum software that powers discussions on over 400,000 sites around the world.

Of course as a frequently traveler I know this, too. Consultants should provide you data & frameworks – not decisions. They are there to help you correct your course when you want to make decisions that their history and wisdom tells them might lead you into a dark alley. In my view the best VCs are merely your guides.
