And of course there was the F-bomb count that Cathy Brooks and I were keeping on Dave … by the end of the panel we had counted 8. The tone of the panel was set by David’s announcement that he was relocating to Silicon Valley (and dragging Geni & Yammer with him).

RedBeacon was the 3rd winner (year 1: Yammer, year 2: Mint.com) – not bad company. In industry this is known as “yield management” and of course it needs to exist. The company was called Red Beacon. I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. Nice sweep!

Of course none of these funds (my own included) want to be lumped into just one category because we all move across the spectrum. And of course the big question is whether Salesforce.com can out innovate these startups (especially after their acquisition of InStranet ). Expect great things from Assistly. And I know that great startups like Yammer are doing well. Assistly’s main competitor is ZenDesk, whom I’m told also has a great product.

The trailblazer in the category of course was Twitter and David Sacks quickly spotted the use case for enterprise and launched Yammer, which was purchased by Microsoft for more than $1 billion. And of course we welcome Microsoft Ventures.

Nah, of course not. Phenomenal tech talent including the co-founder of Farmville- Zao Yang – AND ALSO the lead product designer – George Ishii – for Yammer & Geni. So yes, I want to hire somebody with really high IQ and EQ but not somebody who is more knowledgeable at your specific skill set than you are.
