Web Designers vs. Web Developers

SoCal CTO

Funny graphic by @shanesnow that captures the difference between web designers vs. web developers: Like the issue of Startup CTO or Developer , often startup founders who are less technical have this same question. Do I need a designer or a developer?

Los Angeles Web Developer

SoCal CTO

He was struggling to find high quality developers in Los Angeles. Just the kind of person I like to meet. :) But I was a bit surprised when he emphasized how hard it had been for them to find a web developer in Los Angeles. My flippant comment was, “If you do a Google search for Los Angeles web developer, you’ll find a LOT of people and firms.” Web design typically refers to the process of interface design and graphic design.

Initial Conversation with a CTO or Technical Advisor

SoCal CTO

Are you a non-technical startup founder who’s about to go have a conversation with a Chief Technical Officer (CTO) or Technical advisory type person? Maybe you have questions about the types of developers you need and even whether you need a Startup CTO or Developer or both.

Hiring Developers Before Product/Market Fit?

SoCal CTO

When I talk with early-stage companies, often the discussion starts with them asking me about Hiring a CTO for Your Startup , or Finding a Technical Cofounder for Your Startup or How to Find Programmers for Your Startup. The startup founder is definitely not ready to hire a CTO.

Poor Software Developers - Pull the Plug Early

SoCal CTO

There's an old adage in software development that I refer to all the time: The first 90% of development takes 90% of the time. And I use it all the time now when I get the kind of message that I received: I'm looking for a web developer to continue work on my website. I used a company in India to develop the site, and it's mostly done. Then I found a local developer but it was a truly awful experience.

Finding Developers is Tough Again

SoCal CTO

I’m seeing and hearing that it’s becoming tough finding good developers again, at least here in Los Angeles. On Friday, at the LA CTO Forum , I heard from a couple of CTOs having trouble finding good developers. My company, TechEmpower , recently added a few top notch developers, but it wasn’t easy to find just the right people. I was wondering, what methods have you found to be successful in finding developers? What Other People Say About Sourcing Developers?

Our Insights and Opinions article today is from Tony Karrer , CEO/CTO of TechEmpower , a Los Angeles Web Development firm, who gives some hints, tips, and observations about the increasing difficulty of finding technical talent in Los Angeles.

Software Development Companies in Southern California

SoCal CTO

I've helped organize the Los Angeles CTO Forum for almost 10 years. This is a private group of CTOs who are responsible for software development within their companies. They are generally the senior most person responsible for custom software development, database design, database administration, web development, etc. But where do the software development companies in Southern California congregate? But not really CTO events.

Symptoms of a Weak Development Team

SoCal CTO

I am hearing from my project management team a bit of distrust in the technical capacity of our web development team. I think we suffer because of the distance and culture but the project management team takes every late delivery or small bug as evidence that the development team may not be capable. But please: Just because your development team has these symptoms does not mean that you have a weak development team. No communication between developers.

How to Find and Hire a Developer

Tech Zulu Event

At Silicon Beach Fest Hollywood 2012 Kevin Winston organized a panel called “How to Find and Hire a Developer”. Always have a developer do a test project before hiring them to make sure they deliver quality work. Try to identify developers that are flexible in their design.
