Aliso Viejo-based software developer Smith Micro Sofware said that it has launched a new, design and development service, which will help its customers develop their own mobile apps. According to Smith Micro, the service is aimed at B2 enterprises and startups, and help them develop iOS, Android, and Windows apps.

By conceptualizing, selling, gathering feedback and then developing a product, startups achieve success more quickly and economically. Eric (Ries) was a student in one of the very earliest customer development classes at Berkley.

RingRvenue develops technology which tracks responses to phone calls, allowing calls to be used for affiliate sales and tracking. RingRevenue said the new funding will go towards growth and expansion, including expansion of its customer development and support teams, and an expansion of its presence outside the U.S.

Previous to this, I ran a custom, mobile application development shop. The platform approach we took allows teams and companies and venues to access the best functionality, at a subcription price, rather than a custom development price. I was working with Madison Square Garden, the Knicks, the Rangers, and others.

It’s OK because in an era where you can much more rapidly prototype and build products it is far more beneficial to launch your first version, get initial customer traction and then talk to your customer base to understand how well it meets their needs.

That died with waterfall software development. Do you really want to spent $100k building a product to discover through Customer Development that the market is too small? Do so at your peril. So, definition: when I talk about a business plan I’m not talking about a 40-page Word document outlining your market approach.

Evangelism marketing is an advanced form of word of mouth marketing (WOMM), now largely replaced by Facebook and Twitter.

Assistly is a customer support product designed to meet the needs of the current era of multi-channel touch points (think Twitter, email, chat, forum in addition to phone calls). The exact same team had worked on 2 previous customer service startups (and 1 non-CS product). So the whole customer development cycle is very streamlined.

My take was that this follows three trends: a) customer involvement in product design, b) mass customization [e.g. On the first point – think of Steven Blank’s customer development but for physical products. Zazzle] and c) artisan products [etsy, foodzie].

So when he saw the browser it instantly dawned on him that this would be the greatest customer development tool ever. But also when you’re developing so is your competitor.
