Edmunds Jumps On AR Bandwagon

Santa Monica-based car information and shopping site Edmunds has jumped on the augmented reality (AR) bandwagon today, saying it is launching a new AR feature for its iPhone app, which will help shoppers see what a vehicle will look like--and if it will fit--anywhere they might want to park it. Edmunds said its AR feature will let users see how different vehicles might fit in their garages, parking spaces and driveways. Edmunds said it developed the new feature using Apple's ARKit.

Santa Monica-based auto information site Edmunds.com is extending its outreach to third party software developers, and is offering up affiliate payments of five dollars per new car lead generated by its API partners, the company said this week. According to Edmunds.com, web and mobile developers who use Edmunds.com''s API will receive the payments for every new car lead generated via its APIs, which it says is one of the highest commission rates in the automotive category.

Los Angeles-based Edmunds.com said Tuesday that it has acquired CarCodeSMS , a developer of mobile service to allow car shoppers to engage in one-on-one text messaging with dealers. Edmunds.com said it has renamed CarCode SMS under the new name Edmunds CarCode as part of the acquisition, which came as a direct result of CarCodeSMS winning a recent "hackathon" sponsored by the Edmunds.com. CarCodeSMS had won won Edmunds'' second annual Hackomotive challenge last February.
