LA's Q3 2018 Seed Deals Steady, Says Report

A new report, from Los Angeles startup investor Amplify LA , says that Los Angeles seed investment deals in Q3 were for the most part steady, with a total of $59.4M raised across 27 Los Angeles startups. The group says its tracking found that the average seed round size was $2.2M for the quarter. Amplify LA said it found that software-as-a-service (SaaS) was the most funded sector, with a decline in investments in such areas as e-commerce and mobile technology.

According to the nonprofit, the deep sea off Kalamat, Greece, has been selected as the location for finalists teams to map, as part of the "Grand Prize" of the competition.

With Vernalis Buy, Ligand Adds to Portfolio, Establishes U.K. Presence

Ligand Pharmaceuticals said Wednesday that its acquisition of U.K.-based biotech Vernalis has closed. The $42.3 million deal netted the San Diego company eight partner programs and a 70-person R&D team in Cambridge, England, plus about $32 million in cash after deal costs. Ligand (NASDAQ: LGND ) CEO John Higgins, in a prepared statement, said the acquisition added more “shots on goal” to the company’s portfolio.

San Francisco-based Anaplan , one of five companies planning to close initial public offerings this week, raised the expected price range for its shares in an SEC filing Wednesday, signaling an IPO that could be richer than it had anticipated. Enterprise planning software company Anaplan, which is privately valued at more than $1.4 billion, had originally proposed selling 15.5 million shares of common stock at a range of $13 to $15 per share.

Cylance Links With Thycotic

Irvine-based cybersecurity tools developer Cylance said this morning that it has linked with privilege access management (PAM) tools provider Thycotic. The two said that CylancePROTECT is now compatible with Thycotic Privilege Manager. The companies said the link will help organizations prevent malware from exploting endpoints. Cylance's cybersecurity tools use artificial intelligence (AI) to stop applications from executing on endpoints.

Snap Launches New Original Series

Santa Monica-based Snap announced a series of brand new, original content, called Snap Originals this morning, which includes content developed by established film and television writers, as well as others. The company said the original content includes a number of serialized shows, "docuseries", and other efforts. Snap said it is tapping such groups as Bunim/Murray Productions, The Duplass Brothers' DBP Donut, and Brad Weston's Makeready On Board for the initial lineup.

YouMail: 4.4 Billion Robocalls In September

Irvine-based voicemail software and services developer YouMail says its tracking of calls find that there was a record 4.4 billion robocalls made in September, which it says is up 83.9 percent over September one year ago. Youmail says the number of robocalls is the highest number of monthly robocalls recorded since it launched its YouMail Robocall index in 2015.
