Qualcomm, AT&T Link On Wireless Drone Communications

San Diego-based Qualcomm and AT&T announced this morning that the two will test the control of unmanned aerial vehicles using AT&T's 4G LTE network. The two said the effort will go to see how cellular networks can support future, wide scale deployment of drones, measuring coverage, signal, strength and mobility across network cells, to support the ability of drones to fly well beyond an operator's visual range.

Temple City-based Fulgent Genetics , based in the San Gabriel Valley, has filed for an IPO, saying that it is seeking to raised $50M in an IPO on the NASDAQ Global Market as FLGT. The IPO is being underwritten by Credit Suisse, Piper Jaffray, Raymond James, and BTIG. Fulgent Genetics is developing genetic testing and laboratory testing technology, and is led by Ming Hsieh, who holds the majority shares in the company.

After signaling that it plans to operate drones via cellular technologies, San Diego-based Qualcomm says today it is working with AT&T to use commercial wireless networks for test flights beyond an operator’s visual line of sight. Qualcomm said in April it had received FAA authorization to operate drones in restricted airspace around its San Diego headquarters, including the use of advanced wireless networks to prevent “lost link” situations with radio-controlled drones.
