Apeel Sciences Finds $70M

Goleta-based Apeel Sciences , a new startup which is developing technology to increase the shelf life of fresh produce--using substances derived from other plants--has raised a big, $70M funding round, the company announced late Wednesday. The company said the funding round came from Viking Global Investors, and also included Andreessen Horowitz, Upfront Ventures, and S2G Ventures.

Vizio Launches Its Own Video Streaming Service

Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. Broadvoice said YipTel serves customers from offices in Utah, Colorado and Texas, providing services to customers worldwide.

Amgen Expands In Rhode Island

Thousand Oaks-based biotech giant Amgen is expanding its footprint in Rhode Island, saying on Tuesday that it is opening a new biomanufacturing plant at its West Greenwich, R.I. campus. According to Amgen, the new plant will manufacture products for both the U.S. and global markets. Amgen says it will invest up to $200M in the new, 120,000 square foot manufacturing plant, which it says will create approximately 150 additional "highly-skilled" manufacturing positions at its campus there.

Bird Expands Dockless Scooters To Paris

In its first move to international markets, Santa Monica-based Bird said on Tuesday that it is launching into Paris, as part of its first expansion into international markets. Bird said it is launching a pilot program in Paris, and also plans to deploy its scooters in Tel Aviv. The expansion to Paris follows the entry of chief competitor Lime, which deployed its own scooters in Paris earlier this year.
