Los Angeles-based Circular Systems , a startup developing material science technology to transform waste into fiber, yarn, and textile fabrics for the fashion industry, has scored funding as part of a Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.) accelerator effort, Levi's announced today. Amount of funding was not announced, however, Levi's has been offering up as much as $50,000 to startups to help tackle some of the sustainability challenges in the apparel industry.

A new effort to punish China appears to likely to instead hit Los Angeles jobs instead , due to an obscure provision in a national defense bill, which seeks to bar Chinese manufacturers from supplying things like train cars and buses to the United States. According to a report from Wired, a provision in that national defense bill would block BYD , which manufactures electric buses in Lancaster, from the U.S. market.

Zingle, a startup whose software is used by hospitality, travel, and retail industries to more easily and quickly connect with their customers via messaging, has been acquired for about $42 million in cash by Medallia, a publicly traded software company in San Francisco. The Medallia (NYSE: MDLA ) IPO earlier this year was one of a number of successful public market debuts by companies offering cloud-based software, often dubbed software-as-a-service.

McDonald's will be testing a new burger made from the plant-based burgers from El Segundo-based Beyond Meat , at restaurants in Canada, the fast food giant said this morning. According to McDonald's, the new "P.L.T." will be made with Beyond Meat, and will be available in select restaurants in Canada beginning on September 30th. Santa Monica-based Ring , the developer of connected doorbells and security cameras which is now part of Amazon, has rolled out a new, indoor security camera, called the Ring Indoor Cam. According to Ring, the new product is available for $59.99, the company's most affordable camera. The new camera is part of a refresh of Ring's various security cameras, which include new battery, solar, and plug-in powered version of the Ring Stick Up Cam.
