Watertower Ventures Raises $5M Investment Fund

Los Angeles-based Watertower Ventures has raised a new, $5M investment fund, which will focus on companies in the Internet infrastructure, next-generation e-commerce, digital media, gaming, augmented reality and artificial intelligenec, and consumer Internet areas. The fund, led by longtime technology advisor Derek Norton , is backed by a long list of local LPs from the digital media, entertainment, and technology areas.

ObEN Gets Backing From SoftBank Ventures Korea

Pasadena-based ObEN , which develops virtual reality avatar technology, has scored funding from SoftBank Ventures Korea, SoftBank said this morning. Size of the investment was not announced. SoftBank Ventures Korea said the investment came via its SB Next Media Innovation Fund. ObEn, led by Nikhil Jain, develops software which allows users to take a selfie and voice recording, and turns that into a photo-realistic, virtual reality version of a human.

JetPack Aviation Links With Georgia Tech

Van Nuys-based JetPack Aviation , a developer of commercially available "jet packs" for sending people into the air, said today that it has signed an agreement with Georgia Tech Research Institute. According to the company, the two will merge JetPack's technology with a similar subsystem bilt by Georgia Tech, to address military applications. JetPack did not details terms of the agreement with Georgia Tech, but said the two will jointly solicit R&D funding from the U.S. military.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX has delayed its launch of the EchoStar XXIII communications satellite, due to high winds, the company said late Monday evening, and is now working towards a new launch window. SpaceX called off the launch of its Falcon 9 carrying the EchoStar XIII at 10:36 P.M. PST. The launch this time is from Launch Complex 39A at NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
