MOX Networks, Owned By Billionaire Soon-Shiong, Expands Fiber Routes

El Segundo-based MOX Networks , the fiber optic network operator owned by billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, is expanding in West Virginia, saying it has just added a new Columbus to Ashburn route through West Virginia. The company--which says it is in the midst of a corporate branding and identity under the name MOX--did not say how much it is spending to establish the fiber optic route, only saying it will be open by Q2 of 2020.

After Ending Cancer Drug Program, Halozyme Predicts Profits in 2020

Halozyme suffered a setback in November when its investigational pancreatic drug failed a Phase 3 clinical trial , but its CEO says the biotech’s drug delivery technology will make the company profitable as early as the second quarter of this year. The San Diego-based company’s technology, called Enhanze, allows some drugs traditionally given intravenously over hours to be delivered instead by subcutaneous injection in minutes.

The San Diego Zoo is getting its very own, battery energy storage system, which is being installed by San Diego's EDF Renewables , according to the zoo and EDF Renewables on Tuesday. According to the two, they are now operating a 1-megawatt (MW)/4-megawatt hour (MWh) battery storage facility in Balboa Park, which will be used to mitigate spikes in the zoo's energy costs.

Sonos To End Support For Older Hardware

FloQast Finds $40M More

Los Angeles-based FloQast , which develops financial close management software, has raised $40M in its Series C funding round, the company said on Tuesday. The funding was led by Norwest Venture Partners. The company said it has now raised over $90M in total funding for its software products. FloQast is led by CEO Mike Whitmire. The company has previously raised fundnig from Amplify LA, Danmar Capital, Insight Venture Partners, Polaris Partners, Toba Capital, and Wavemaker Partners.

Viasat Wins $90M Contract From USAF

Carlsbad-based satellite communications provider Viasat says it has scored a new contract from the United States Air Force, worth $90M, to provide handheld link radios for special warfare operators. According to Viasat, the contract is an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract. The company's BATS-D device are used to connect to both satellite and wireless networking systems, and are known by the military as the AN/PRC-161.

San Diego-based Calidi Biotherapeutics , which is developing cell-based oncolytic virus immunotherapies for cancer, has raised a Series A funding, from two, South Korean investment companies, the company announced this morning. Size of that Series A funding was not announced. The funding came from Won & Partners and Greentable Co., Ltd. According to Calidi Biotherapeutics, the new funding will go towards advancing manufacturing for its pre-IND and IND filings.
