There has always been tension between CPG (consumer packaged goods) companies and the retailers who sell their products to consumers. If a consumer will pay a fixed price for a product or service then the battle over who gets the margin in any sale is between the person who merchandises a product and the person who manufactures it. This is an age-old marketplace tension where leverage often determines the value captured.

Los Angeles-based venture investor Wavemaker Partners has seen one of its portfolio companies hit the public markets, albeit via an unusual, reverse merger arrangement. According to Phunware , a developer of mobile application lifecycle management software, it has been acquired by Stellar Acquisition II , which is listed on the NASDAQ Stock Market. Stellar is a so-called "blank check acquisition company" specifically designed to for reverse mergers.

San Francisco-based synthetic DNA developer Twist Bioscience Corporation is in a big expansion, saying it has opened up a new office in Carlsbad. Twist is venture backed by such investors as Biomatics Capital, plus Reinet Fund S.C.A., F.I.S., NFT Investment Limited, KANGMEI Group, Bay City Capital GF Xinde Life Science Investment Fund, 3W Partners Capital and Ditch Plains Capital Management LP.

Los Angeles-based MediaAlpha , a developer of programmatic advertising software, said today that it is expanding into the European market. The firm said it has opened up a London office, and hired on Robert Goldsmith as Director of Demand Partnerships as part of its efforts in Europe. Goldsmith was previously a Sales Director at KAYAK. MediaAlpha said Goldsmith will lead its travel industry initiatives across Europe.

Santa Monica-based movie ticketing service Atom Tickets has launched a big new, affiliate program , saying on Tuesday that it has started working with online publishers to share referral fees from ticket purchases. According to Atom Tickets, it has begun working with such websites as PopSugar and RetailMeNot on the program, where publishers receive money when their users buy movie tickets or gift cards.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ) has acquired smart-doorbell security system maker Ring as the company seeks to expand its home-security business. The purchase was first reported by Geekwire, which cited a separate report from Reuters that the deal is valued at about $1 billion. That would make Amazon’s purchase of Ring the third largest in the Seattle e-commerce giant’s history.

Santa Monica-based studio Lionsgate , and online giant Amazon said Tuesday that the two are in a content deal, which will bring a long list of Lionsgate movies to Amazon Prime Video members in Latin America. According to the two, the titles covered under the content deal include such titles as Wonder, John Wick: Chapter 2, The Shack, and Saban's Power Rangers.

Pasadena-based big data visualization and analytics startup Virtualitics has raised $7M in a Series B funding round, the company announced this morning, led by an investment by Centricus. The funding also included the Venture Reality Fund (The VR Fund) and other, un-named investors. Virtualitics, which is led by Michael Amori, said it has now raised more than $11M in total.

Tinder said it launched the #representlove campaign because--although there are now emojis for people of color and emojis for same-sex couples, there isn't one that represents interracial couples.

El Segundo-based online postage and shipping software developer Stamps.com said late Tuesday afternoon that it has named Jonathan Bourgoine as its new Chief Technology Officer. Bourgoine was most recently the VP and Chief Technology Officer of Mattel and, before that, was SVP of Operations at Youbet.com. Bourgoine replaces Stamp.com CTO Michael Biswas, who had been at the firm for the last 15 years.
