Q1 Seed Funding Deals Up From Last Year, Says Amplify LA

Seed stage investments in Los Angeles area startups was up, year-to-year, according to the Q1 2018 LA Seed Deal Report from investor Amplify LA. According to the report from Amplify, 23 LA startups raised a total of $52.9M in seed funding in Q1, which was up 2.5 percent from Q1 of 2017. That said, the quarter-to-quarter results were down 21 percent from what had been an extremely robust Q4.

Snap Planning New Spectacles

Venice, California-based Snap apparently is planning a new line of its Spectacles, based on recent documents filed with the FCC--and uncovered by Variety. According to the filings, Snap recently published an application with the FCC for a new "wearable video camera" with support for the 802.11ac WiFi standard. Snap's original spectacles, which are still available, let users take pictures from the special sunglasses and auto-post them to Snapchat.

Santa Monica-based car ownership service Fair , the new auto startup led by longtime auto veteran Scott Painter, has inked a strategic alliance with auto financing giant Ally Financial. According to the two, Fair will use Ally's SmartAuction when vehicles are returned to Fair, as a remarketing solution for those vehicles. Fair allows consumers to drive a car by paying month-to-month, without the traditional limitations of a lease.
