Close. Recently I was asked to review an offer letter for a senior director of business development. The CEO was concerned that he was offering far too much in the form of incentive compensation, with bonuses that could greatly exceed the base salary if all the bonus items were achieved. I asked the CEO to imagine what the company would look like if all those bonus-expensive items were completely achieved in one year.

The University of Southern California 's Viterbi School of Engineering says that its new, entering class of students to the school is 44 percent female--significantly higher than the national average--thanks to its efforts to reach out to women and other underrepresented minorities in engineering. According to USC Viterbi, that number is a historic high for the school.

ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW ), the Santa Clara, CA-based giant that provides cloud-based IT services, is boosting its emphasis on human-centered design with its acquisition of Telepathy , a San Diego specialist in customer experience and design. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. “ServiceNow chose us because of the design culture and process we have created over the last 17 years,” Telepathy co-founder and CEO Chuck Longanecker wrote Monday in a blog post announcing the deal.

Los Angeles-based online car rental service HyreCar is expanding its reach in the Madison, Wisconsin area, through a link with personal chauffeur app developer RideAlfred. According to the two, HyreCar's inventory will be available to drivers for RideAlfred in Madison. HyreCar lets drivers who aren't using their vehicles rent them out to others. The 2017 Nobel Prizes with a biomedical bent were announced this week. Three researchers shared the physiology and medicine prize for their work shining light on the circadian rhythms that govern the wake-and-sleep cycles of all organisms. Los Angeles-based The Honest Company , the natural home products brand, said late Thursday that it has closed on a Series E financing round. Size of the round was not announced. The round was led by Fidelity Management & Research Company, along with others. Unconfirmed reports place the funding at $75M, at $19.60 per share, a significant decrease from the company's prior valuation of $45.75.

A popular approach for aspiring entrepreneurs these days seems to be to corner anyone who will listen, with a pitch on their current “million dollar idea.” The initial monologue usually ends with the question “How much money do you think this is worth?” In my opinion, ideas are a commodity, and are really not worth much, outside the context of a visionary leader who can execute.

Irvine-based Western Digital has rolled out another, gigantic hard drive, saying today that it has launched a new, 14TB enterprise class hard drive. San Diego-based Ligand Pharmaceuticals announced late Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire Crystal Bioscience , a developer of chicken-derived, human antibodies. Ligand said it agreed to pay $25M in cash plus additional potential payments of up to $10.5M based on "success-based" milestones and revenue sharing. Crystal has developed technology which allows chickens to be used to generate human antibodies.
