Transphorm's Semiconductors Powering New Solar Power Generator Product

Goleta-based semiconductor Transphorm, which designs and manufactures gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors, says its technology has been used in a new product from Inergy. According to the two, Inergy and its design partner Telcodium used Transphorm's semiconductors as a key part of its new portable solar generator, the "Kodiak Extreme". The new solar generator provides up to 2kW of 110 or 120V output which it says is more powerful and lighter than competitive products, and in particular runs much cooler that it does not require an internal cooling fan. Transphorm's semiconductors (both a FET and PQFN device) are being used to power the photovoltaic (PV) inverter and battery charger in the device, replacing the MOSFETs and Si IGBTs used in the prior model--which generated a lot of heat. Inergy's products are targeted at the consumers and professional markets, including those in construction, emergency services, and industrial markets. The inverters used in the solar generator are used to convert DC solar power from solar panels into AC power, like you'd get from a wall socket.
