Toyota Plans Artificial Intelligence Push

Auto maker Toyota , which is headquartered in Torrance, says this morning that it is announcing how it plans to leverage artificial intelligence research in its next generation vehicles. Toyota, which has not yet revealed the details of the announcement, said the effort comes out of the Toyota Research Institute (TRI), a research and development enterprise focused on artificial intelligence for automobiles, robotics, and scientific discovery.

Carlsbad-based Source Intelligence , a provider of supply chain compliance services and data, has raised $17.5M in an investment round, according to the company. The funding came from Kayne Partners. Source Intelligence said the funding goes to growing its network and advancing its platform. Los Angeles-based audio advertising provider Triton Digital has rolled out a new product specifically aimed at podcasting proviers, the company said Tuesday. According to Triton, its new Tap Podcast product is a version of its advertising platform, which specifically helps podcast publishers insert ads into their audio stream. Triton said the new tool allows podcast publishers to add pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll audio ads into their podast episodes or audio files.

San Diego-based Illumina has filed two patent infringement suits in Europe, against five different companies, asserting patent infringement of it patents covering the use of cell-free fetal DNA for non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). The companies in the two suits include The Doctors Laboratory Ltd , TDL Genetics Ltd , and Ariosa Diagnostics, Inc. in a suit filed in the United Kingdom; and Centrum Badań Sp z o.o. and Medgenetix Sp z o.o. in a patent infringement suit filed in Poland.

EDF Renewable Energy Turns On Wind Project

San Diego-based renewable energy developer EDF Renewable Energy says one of its wind energy projects, the Slate Creek Wind Project in Kansas, has reached commercial operation. According to EDF, the 150 megawatt project, 50 miles south of Wichita, reached commercial operation on December 29th. The power from the project is being sold to Great Plains Energy.

San Diego-based medical device maker NuVasive said late Monday that it is acquiring Aliso Viejo-based skeletal deformity treatment provider Ellipse Technologies , in a deal worth $380M in cash plus up to $30M in earn out. The debt funding comes from Pharmakon Advisors and Athyrium Capital Management. Faraday Future Unveils Concept Car

Stealthy, Los Angeles-based electric vehicle startup Faraday Future has unveiled its first "concept car" to the public this morning, showing off what it calls the FFZERO1 CONCEPT at CES. The vehicle--think "Batmobile"--is a race car that Faraday Future said it will use to use as a test bed for its future vehicles. The FFZERO1 has more than 1,000 horsepower and a top speed of 200 MPH, and goes from 0-60 in less than 3 seconds, acccording to Faraday Future.

Qualstar Gets NASDAQ Warning

Westlake Village-based Qualstar , the manufacturer of tape drives and high efficiency power supplies, has received a warning from the NASDAQ over its bid price. According to Qualstar, it received the latter on December 29th from the NASDAQ, a Notice of Bid Price Deficiency--a result of the company's stock trading below $1.00 per share. The company says it has 180 calendar days to regain compliance with the minimum price requirement before facing further action.
