I've had several Startup CTO Consulting sessions recently where it became apparent that the Founder needed help with the business and product as much or more than the technology. I suggested that they should look for someone like me, but on the business end. Then we discussed how they could go about finding this startup business advisor. Then I got an email that asked: I'm leading the marketing efforts for an early-stage startup.

Just before the holidays, we caught up with Blair Harrison , founder of Frequency (www.frequency.com), a personal video service which lets consumers watch video from the Internet on any of their devices. Harrison created one of the Internet's first video search sites, FastTV, and also ran IFILM, which he sold to Viacom in 2006. We caught up with Blair to learn more about his new startup, and why he thinks we need Frequency.

A new, Los Angeles-based startup, Baboo is looking to help brands and marketers in the entertainment space reach consumers, and recently launched an alpha of its services. The startup, headed by Drake Sutton-Shearer, is offering up media content in exchange for micro-survey answers, to help bolster music, film, TV, sports, and gaming brands. Co-founder Sutton-Shearer previously co-founded Movie Song Vault and The Gift App, and is a former entertainment industry executive.

Los Angeles-based SupperKing , the startup which develops a mobile app enabling people to link with their friends and neighbors for a social dining experience, has tied with a group to promote social dining for charities. The startup said it has linked with the Creative Visions Foundation, which will allow organizations to raise money for charity by creating and hosting community dining events.

Too many entrepreneurs confuse motion with momentum and results. We all know someone who repeatedly tells us how “busy” they are, when it’s hard to see what they get done. Momentum is moving things forward (mass x velocity). Founders or employees in constant motion, but with no momentum, will never get off the ground. It is true that motion in any direction is often better than no motion at all.

I don’t have an MBA. I used to fear that this would put me at a disadvantage in starting my own company, but now I’m convinced that it may be the other way around. In some reputable surveys , as many as two-thirds of entrepreneurs felt that their entrepreneurial spirit was more ingrained than learned, so a specific education level is at least irrelevant.

San Diego-based Independa , the developer of electronics products and software to help seniors live independently longer, has raised $5M in its Series A funding round, the firm announced this morning. The firm said the funding came from City Hill Ventures, strategic partner LG Electronics USA, and other investors. Independa is led by Kian Saneii. Independa said the new funds will go to expand its network of distributors and channel partners, and also will go towards R&D, sales, and marketing

Foursquare wants to know you more in 2013 beginning January 28. At the moment, Foursquare rarely shows a users full name or just their first name and last initial (“John Smith” vs. “John S.”). But if a user searches for a friend in Foursquare, full names appear in the results, but when one clicks on their friend’s profile page they don’t see their last name.

Santa Monica-based startup accelerator LaunchpadLA has just opened up its spring 2013 class applications, and bumped the amount it invests in startups. The accelerator--run by Sam Teller--is one of a crop of startup accelerators which have been the driving force behind the Silicon Beach startup community over the last year. SolarFlare , the developer of high speed networking devices, has raised a new, big $22.0M funding round, according to a regulatory filing from the firm. According to the filing, the firm has raised $22.0M out of an ongoing $23.8M funding round, which opened December 21st. SolarFlare develops low latency, high bandwidth 10GbE adapters and related products.

San Diego-based Ignyta has raised $6M in a Series B funding, the firm said over the holidays. The firm said the funding included $5.5M in a Series B equity funding and $500,000 in a capital term loan from Silicon Valley Bank. The first close of the Series B came in June of 2012, and was worth $2.1M, with the remaining $3.4M from Colt Ventures, City Hill Ventures, and others.

The long, turbulent history of the video-on-demand technology developed by former Marina Del Rey-based CinemaNow continues today, after current owner Rovi Corporation said Thursday afternoon that it plans to pursue a sale of its Rovi Entertainment Stores business--the remains of CinemaNow. Rovi said it has retained GCA Savvian Advisors, LLC, to advise it in the sale.

Calabasas-based > DTS announced this morning that it high definition audio enhancement product, DTS-HD, is now being supported as part of Microsoft's Smooth Streaming platform. Microsoft's Smooth Streaming platform, part of its IIS Media Services, is an adaptive bit rate streaming protocol for sending HD, 1080p media over the Internet. DTS said the new support will allow consumers on PCs, tablets, connected TVs, and set top boxes to experience DTS surround sound.

It looks like Elon Musk , the tech mogul behind Hawthorne-based SpaceX , is settling further into Los Angeles, and has purchased a $17M mansion in Bel Air. The buy was first report by the LA Times. Musk--who has been splitting his time between Los Angeles and Silicon Valley--is also head of electric car company Tesla Motors, and solar leasing firm SolarCity.

Los Angeles-based private equity firm The Gores Group said today that it has completed the acquisition of Therakos , a New Jersey-based firm which provides systems used for immunomodulatory therapy. Financial terms of the buy were not announced. Therakos was part of Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Inc. Gores has named Michael Rechtiene as CEO of Therakos as part of the acquisition.

Anaheim-based electric auto firm Fisker Automotive has filed a lawsuit against its insurance company, over the 338 Karma cars which were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. The lawsuit, against XL Insurance America, claims breach of contract for denying coverage for the damaged vehicles, which were parked in Port Newark, New Jersey. The autos were among the thousands damaged in Sandy from multiple manufacturers.

Los Angeles-based Fandango , the online and mobile movie ticketing service which is a unit of NBCUniversal, said today that its 2012 was its "best year in company history". The company said it had a 12-year record high in ticket sales, web and mobile traffic, and app downloads. Fandango said it was seeing around 41 million monthly unique online and mobile visitors in its peak months of 2012.

San Diego-based Anametrix , the venture-backed developer of marketing analytics software, said today that it has named Pelin Thorogood as its new CEO. Thorogood was previously CMO at the company. Thorogood also joins the company's board. She succeeds co-founder and Chairman Blaise Barrelet, who the company said will remain as Chairman.
