Broadcom Targets Automotive Networks With Chip

Irvine-based Broadcom is targeting the automotive electronics market today with the release of a new product specifically aimed at automotive networks. The chip marke said today that it has launched an Ethernet PHY, which enables low-cost cabling for 100 Mbps Ethernet networks in cars. Broadcom said the chips are sampling now, with production volumes in the first half of 2012.

Sony reported last night that it has detected another, massive hacking attack on its Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network, and Sony Online Entertainment, which it said affected approximately 93,000 accounts on the services. Solar thermal power developer BrightSource Energy said Friday that it has applied for certification of a new project in Riverside County with the California Energy Commission, to develop three 250 megawatt solar thermal power plants on land owned by the Metropolitan Water District.
