Encino-based uSamp , the online panel and sampling firm founded by Matthew Dusig and Gregg Lavin, has raised $6.0M as part of a new funding round, according to a regulatory filing by the firm this week. According to the filing, the funding is part of an ongoing, $7.0M

Hulu Tops 2M Subscribers, Plans New Ad Structure


Los Angeles-based video streaming site Hulu reports this morning that it has now surpassed 2 million paid subscribers to its Hulu Plus service, as of Q1 this year. The company announced the milestone as it announced anew, advertising structure, where it says it will now only charge advertisers based on a 100 percent completion rate. Hulu said there will be no charge for the change, where advertisers will not be charged unless their advertisements have been streamed through completion.

Southern California Bucks VC Trend, As Firms Raise $924.13M In Q1


The latest numbers from the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers, The National Venture Capital Association, and Thomson Reuters have tallied up just under a billion dollars in venture capital investments in the Southern California region in Q1 of this year, a very significant uptick from Q2 of 2011. Southern California's investment totals bucked a downward national trend in venture capital investing.

Samueli, Musk Join Buffett, Gates In Pledge To Give Away Wealth


Two Southern California technology entrepreneurs-- Henry Samueli , who co-founded Broadcom , and Elon Musk , who heads up Hawthorne-based SpaceX --have joined Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates in adding their names to the Giving Pledge , the effort started by Buffett and Gates to giave away at least 50 percent of their wealth in their lifetimes or at death to charity.

Report: Chumby Has Shut Down


San Diego-based Chumby , which had developed Internet-connected, alarm-clock like devices and similar technology, has shut down, according to a report Friday. Chumby--which had been backed by JK&B Capital, Avalon Ventures, Masthead Venture Partners, and O'Reilly AlphaTech Venture--was known for its Linux-based, open platform which let users access Internet content and other services. The firm had raised on the order of $25M in funding for its efforts.

Active Storage Names Engineering VP


Torrance-based Active Storage , the developer of RAID storage systems aimed at the Apple and creative industry, said this morning that it has named Venkat Ramakrishnan as its new Vice President of Engineering. Ramakrishnan was most recently at Promise Technology, and also has served at Cisco and IBM.

Santa Monica-based BeachMint , the social commerce firm headed by Josh Berman, has launched yet another celebrity e-commerce site--this time, , a home fashions site launched in conjunction with Justin Timberlake and interior designer Estee Stanley. According to BeachMint, the new HomeMint site will offer up curated home goods and accessories, plus art and photography.

Eucalyptus Systems Raises $30M


Santa Barbara-based Eucalyptus Systems , the cloud computing software developer headed by Marten Mickos , has raised $30M in a Series C round of funding, the firm announced this morning. According to Eucalyptus, the round was led by Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), and also included existing investors Benchmark Capital , BV Capital, and New Enterprise Associates. IVP's Steve Harrick joins the company's board. Eucalpytus said it has now raised a total of $55.5M in capital.

RealtyTrac Acquires Homefacts


Irvine-based RealtyTrac , which provides an online marketplace and service to track foreclosure properties, said this week that it has acquired Homefacts , an online data aggregator tracking real estate information. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. As part of the acquisition, RealyTrac said that Homefacts founder James Moyle joins the company as president and Chief Operating Officer.

Mogreet Opens Midwest Sales Office


Los Angeles-based Mogreet , coming off a new round of venture funding, is in expansion mode, saying that it has opened up a new Midwest sales office for the company. Mogreet said it has opened up a new office headed by Joshua Pyne, who the firm snagged from ChaCha, the mobile questions and answers service. Mogreet recently raised $4.1M in a new round, from Black Diamond Ventures, DFJ Frontier, Ascend Ventures, Bryant Park Ventures and Draper Associates.

iRise Adds iPad, Android Emulation To Prototyping Software


El Segundo-based iRise , which develops enterprise prototyping software, used to help business users mock up visual software prototypes of applications, said Wednesday that it has added new support for iPads and Android phones. The company--which is backed by Morgan Stanley Venture Partners and Deutsche Bank--said its software now can create "ultra-realistic" visual simulations of apps running on the iPad an Android.

SRS Labs Acquired By DTS


Santa Ana-based SRS Labs , the developer of audio processing and enhancement technology, is being acquired by fellow audio processing firm DTS , in a deal worth approximately $148M, the firms said this morning. SRS and Calabasas-based DTS said that DTS will pay cash and stock valued at $9.50 per share for SRS Labs, a premium of 38 percent per share over SRS Labs' price as of close of trading Monday.
