Twiistup 6 has come to an end. Out is the “cocktail only&# Twiistup and in is the new format of a conference that should take its rightful place on the national technology calendar. I believe that Twiistup is now a platform from which to grow and highlight what is uniquely LA. Much of this was highlighted at Twiistup.

First, I’d like to quote (paraphrase) Brad Feld speaking at Twiistup in LA in 2009, “I keep hearing people in LA talking with a chip on their shoulders about building a tech business here relative to Silicon Valley. DemandMedia has already scaled a tech team to a considerable size in Santa Monica.

A few weeks ago, Rahul Sonnad --a serial entrepreneur who is best known for founding and selling thePlatform to Comcast--alternately confused and dazzled attendees at Twiistup, the Los Angeles tech conference, with a fake-stilted-Indian-immigrant and ukulele-singing-and-dancing studded pitch for his firm, Geodelic (www.geodelic.com).

I recently hosted a panel at the Twiistup Conference about LA tech companies. In the bay area it’s quite common for the entrepreneurs starting a company to be developers or technologists who can build the first versions of their products. Despite the above, great entrepreneurs, teams, companies in LA can always find capital.

Friday evening, August 19th, rolled around and Startup Weekend LA was underway with attendees showing up at Coloft in Santa Monica around 6:00 pm and the classic Idealab keg there to quench everyone’s thirst. Guests, visitors and teams mingled away enjoying appetizers and snacks along with this LASW’s 3rd keg. Rob Maigret.
