This morning, Los Angeles-based Lottay (www.lottay.com) launched its online gifting site, announced its funding by DFJ Frontier, and also the appointment of former Evite GM Harry Lin as CEO. What's the idea behind Lottay? Harry Lin: The idea behind Lottay, is to make gift giving online as satisfying as it is in the real world.

And many short-termists will think it’s a bad idea. And many people actually still use Evite. [most importantly] – It’s a great strategic decision. With nearly 25 million customers using Netflix it’s clear that everyone will have an opinion on this. Indeed, my Twitter stream tells me so. It defied logic.

Your new idea won’t resonate with people the way “check-ins&# does because they’ve never heard of it by definition. In my view almost all ideas are derivative. And, yes, somebody has got to kill off evite. That’s too late. It’s the puck at your feet. Come up with your own novel thoughts.

The second we started talking, I said -- wow, they've really got something here, have a great base, a very good team, and good technology, and the pieces were all in place. As you know, there are lots of puzzle pieces to building a business, and they had everything going for it.

So when Sam Rosen came to me with the idea of disrupting storage with a product that is priced cheaper than existing incumbents and he could build a product that is a better service I was intrigued. Want to eradicate Evite? The US market is worth more than $25 billion and Europe is the same. I’ve seen 10 tries. TripAdvisor?
