The only other ways to get discovered was to have good organic search results or to get covered by a major blog site. I had intended to talk about how bad the process could become, not to name-and-shame anybody (and The Funded was not yet around). It was sort of like Twitter’s list of who you follow but much, much smaller.

By now we all know that the largest part of the online spend has been SEM (search engine marketing) where people buy CPC (cost per click) links to display alongside the “organic&# search results in the search engine.

My firm GRP Partners recently funded a young LA based company named Ad.Ly And if even 1% of users click on the ads because they’re relevant rather than on the organic search it’s a HUGE business (as you know). Advertising has driven the majority of Internet innovation.
