This investment started with Dana Settle (Greycroft) and I each putting in $750,000 into a young company doing less than $1 million in sales and has blossomed into one of the fastest growing companies in Los Angeles if not the entire country.

We did a founder “eHarmony&# where I matched the CEO’s with their chosen mentors and each one mapped to a one VC.

As a mentor to entrepreneurs, I often get asked what you can do to build the right culture. Mentoring and training programs need to be put in place early. Technology can be used to facilitate customer support and sales, as well as enhance your product. The simple answer is effective communication and leadership.

My other co-founder, Rusty Jenkins, was also with that company, doing sales. On average, not including our internal friends, every user who joins the site is inviting four new friends, and we haven't done any marketing except a press release. The big thing for us has been those connections to investors and mentors.

As a mentor to entrepreneurs, I often get asked for the magic that has made Amazon the world's most valuable brand , from a total unknown only twenty years ago. For example, when delivery costs and delays were still a major online sales hurdle, Amazon Prime membership was invented to offer free next day shipping.

They certainly struggle to find mentors as there is nothing more frustrating than trying to help a company who is afraid to tell you anything. Marketing futures can be really good for enterprise software companies where the information is passed between sales rep and potential customer in terms of near-term roadmap. They come and go.
