In this three-part series I will explore the ways that the Venture Capital industry has changed over the past 5 years that I would argue are a direct result of changes in the software industry, not the other way around. I will argue that LPs who invest in VC funds will also need to adjust a bit as well. Enter Amazon.

Over the past month a colleague ( Chang Xu ) and I sifted through data on the venture capital industry (as we do every year) and made a bunch of calls to VCs and LPs to confirm our hypotheses. As a result of the IPO window shifting we saw a massive inflow of public-market capital into the latest stages of venture.

According to the company, the second round of funding came from S3 Ventures, Performance Edge Partners and Zeitgeist Capital. The company also said it has appointed Phil Myers as Executive Chairman--Myers was previously CEO of StoredIQ (also backed by S3), and also served at Cyclone Commerce, SalesLogix, and other firms.

This was really a fun week at TWiVC because we decided to have an entrepreneur come and talk about raising capital rather than having a VC come on. The round was led by S3 Ventures, and also included Mark Cuban and Tim Headington. S3's Brian R. Irvine-based BlueCava , a developer of device identification technology used for both online advertising tracking, as well as fraud prevention, said Tuesday that it has raised $9.5M in a funding round.

Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Compared cost there vs. second company that raised $500K and used S3 and other platforms. In second venture - compared Salesforce.com vs. S3 - as platform. However, these platforms could be interesting for prototype and pilot solutions.
