Wander Debuts Wireless, High Speed Networking In Santa Monica

Los Angeles-based Wander has waded into the high speed, Internet access business, saying on Wednesday that it has launched a new, roughly $25-per-month high speed networking service in Santa Monica. The startup--led by David Fields and Dan Rahmel--said that it is providing last-mile, wireless Internet to users using low-cost wireless hardware and its own software. The company says that most consumers are paying for "way more speed" than they need, and that its $25 per month provides 50 Mbps service--more than enough to connect and use all of your home and mobile devices. The company claims it is available to "tens of thousands" of households on day one. Wander appears to be using off-the-shelf hardware from wireless access point provider Ubiquiti for its network, and says so far it has access to 200 buildings across Santa Monica and Van Nuys; the company appears to be leveraging the rooftops of local buildings to extend its wireless footprint, as opposed to the more traditional deployment of wireless equipment on hilltops used by traditional wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs).
