The USC project was developed jointly by the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and the Signal Analysis and Interpretation Lab (SAIL) at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. The two said the service is also able to detect and filter through things like sarcasm in Twitter posts.

GetAround, another venture backed peer-to-peer car rental service, already has a Southern California beachhead in San Diego. Zipcar has been inviting the press to an event tomorrow with L.A.

Tom Grasty: Essentially, we started off as a graduate school project at USC. A few months later, we won the USC New Venture Competition.
