Yammer , the business focused micromessaging service which started as an offspring of Los Angeles-based family tree and genealogy site Geni , is reportedly in the last legs of a deal to be acquired by Microsoft for more than $1 billion. According to Bloomberg and other sources, the deal is expected to be announced as early as Friday.

In the case of the kid getting much (much) larger than its parent, Yammer , the one time spinout of Los Angeles-based genealogy and family tree website Geni , has now squarely out-raised venture capital than its parent firm, saying Wednesday that it has raised an $85M funding round. Geni is, however, an original investor in Yammer.

Los Angeles-based Yammer, the corporate focused instant messaging service spun out of Geni.com, said today that the firm is updating its service and adding a new groups feature. According to Yammer, its new Groups feature allows messages and members on the site to be managed around specific groups within companies.

Santa Monica-based BetterWorks said today that it has expanded its services into San Francisco and the Bay Area, and is planning on opening up in New York and Boston soon. Craig's co-founders include Zao Yang, the creator of Farmville, and George Ishii, co-founder of Geni and Yammer.

West Hollywood-based Geni , the online family tree and family history service, said Thursday that it has promoted a number of employees, including naming two executives.
