It was the midst of a recession and I was happy to have any job at all let alone what was considered one of the more prestigious business jobs at the time graduating from UCSD. I study for tests last minute. And I studied every statistic on the back of every baseball card and memorized batting averages, ERA and even birthdates and such. I got into a great university (UCSD) and a great masters program (University of Chicago) and still did fine even though I could only sit through 50% of the classes.

There is a separate study showing that disadvantaged children given access to 12 free books to take home in the summer (and nothing else including no assignment) scored significantly higher in reading than a control group given no books. He actually was the founding president of my fraternity at UCSD.
