Sonos Hardware Plan Casts Doubts On The Smart Home

The new plan announced by Santa Barbara-based Sonos to essentially "brick" all of its legacy products, is casting doubt on the lifetime of "smart homes", as loyal, early adopters of the company's products are faced with having to throw away their speakers and other hardware. Sonos told its users on Tuesday that it is discontinuing support for its older products, saying that its legacy products--built between 2005 and 2011, "do not have enough memory or processing power to sustain future innovation". Sonos has told its users that if they continue to use those legacy produdcts, that even the company's newest hardware "will not receive software updates and new features".
