BlackBerry's New Lab Unit Leverages Work From Irvine's Cylance

BlackBerry said on Monday that it is launching a brand new, advanced lab called the BlackBerry Advanced Technology Development Labs, which will leverage technology created by Irvine-based Cylance. BlackBerry acquired in February of 2019 in a deal worth $1.4 billion. According to BlackBerry, the new business unit will focus on research and development in the cybersecurity space. The new business unit will include a team of over 120 software developers, architects, researchers, product leads and security experts, according to BlackBerry. It's unclear how many of those positions are in Irvine, where BlackBerry continues to have a healthy presence, and appears to have been seeking employees. Blackberry said that the initial projects from BlackBerry Labs will focus on machine learning approaches to security, and will work with BlackBerry's existing Cylance, Enterprise, and QNX business units.
