Hulu Goes Green, Moves Data Centers To 100 Percent Renewable Energy

Los Angeles-based streaming television service Hulu, in a major move to reduce its impact on the environment, has moved its data centers to a 100 percent, renewable energy data facility in Las Vegas. Hulu said it is partnering with data center provider Switch, which is one of the largest renewable energy-powered data center providers in the industry. Hulu said its new 100 percent renewable data center takes up 2.4 million square feet across 12 buildings. In addition to the move to 100 percent renewables, Hulu said the new provider and location also helps it keep clear of such natural disasters as earthquakes, since it is outside of fault lines in a "Seismic Zone 1". Hulu said the move will eliminate 265,000 carbon tons of emission from the environment, the equivalent to more than 50,000 cars off the road for a year. Switch says its power comes from two solar power stations in Las Vegas--which it started building in 2016--which have a combined 179MW of capacity, in addition to other contracted renewable energy sources.
