XPRIZE Names Final Five Teams In Effort To Wring Water From Thin Air

The XPRIZE Foundation, the Los Angeles nonprofit which helps run prize-based competitions to help solve the world's problems, said it has named five finalists in the $1.75M Water Abundance XPRIZE--its prize which is aimed at encouraging the development of technology which can extract water from merely thin air. According to the foundation, the five finalists are the Hydro Harvest Operation (Newcastle, Australia); JMCC WING (South Point – Island of Hawaii); Skydra (Chicago, IL); Uravu (Hyderabad, India); and the The Veragon & ThinAir Partnership (London, United Kingdom). The prize is being sponsored by the Australian Aid and the Tata Group, and is aimed at the creation of technology that can extract a minimum of 2,000 liters of water per day from the atmosphere using 100 percent renewable energy, at a cost of two cents per liter. The five finalists are splitting a $250,000 milestone prize purse.
