The Wonderful Company Awards $1M for Innovation Challenge

Los Angeles-based The Wonderful COmpany--the brand behind the well knokwn POM Wonderful juice brand--said it has named winners in its $1M Wonderful Innovation Challenge. According to the company, it had over 400 applicants to the contest, and has awarded a portion of its $1M prize to two, pilot programs seeking to use the 50,000 tons of pomegranate husks it generates each year. The company said the funding awards will go to BCD Bioscience, a biotech spinout from the University of California, Davis, which is working on creating a new class of high-value soluble fiber ingredients that can be added to beverages to provide a source of dietary fiber with "strong and differentiated prebiotic effects", and Enagon, a manufacturer of powdering, pulverization, and drying equipment.
