Some wait 5-7 years but usually this is because it’s proving more difficult to raise a new fund due to market conditions or the lack of returns in their current fund. Also, since most funds are 10-year funds there will be pressure in 2012 for this fund to start exiting its investments and return money to its shareholders.

I have been close to the tech & startup sectors for more than 20 years and I can’t think of a period in which I felt more optimistic about the innovation and value creation I see in front of us. So it is unsurprising that an over-funding environment and the commensurate returns hangover would have lasted until about – well – 2012.

Let’s review all of our existing investments. Companies raised too much money in 2005-08 and had high burn rates. Not just tech companies but industrials, too. I’ll bet many of them did a review of their “investment pace&# as in – how quickly should we be investing. We need some visibility.
