A few years ago it became fashionable for large VC’s to do seed funding. But I’m no longer an entrepreneur – I’m a VC at a $200 million fund called GRP Ventures , the largest active fund in Southern California. I think they definitely qualify as a VC and not a seed fund.

There seems to a perpetual shortage of local venture capital investors in the region, despite the huge growth in startup activity here, particularly along Silicon Beach. Among those funds is TYLT Lab (www.tyltlab.com), which recently announced a new, $20M early stage investment fund specifically focused on companies here.

Sky Dayton , the founder of Boingo Wireless , has just scored an exit at one of his angel investments-- WiFiSlam , which was just acquired by Apple on Friday. Sky Dayton is an advisor to WiFiSlam, and one of the initial seed investors in the firm, which has also seed funding from Don Dodge (Google) and Relay Ventures.
