A few years ago, before the Internet was pervasive, before everyone carried a smartphone and before do-it-yourself software tools were available for free, it was difficult to reach a critical mass of new customers without spending a million dollars on a website, custom software and television advertising.

Nils Forsblom: TenFarms is a mobile app developer. PhotoPoll is our first app to push live, and now we're working on our second app, AdTile, which is a mobile advertising solution for applications and mobile software. It was the guy we'd outsourced as CEO. What are TenFarms and PhotoPoll? What happened there?

One of the readers asked my opinion around sharing your startup concept: My first question has always been - how do you protect your idea while shopping around for feedback, partners, developers, etc.? "We are doing something in mobile advertising." Lots of thoughts here. " Ummm. "Good luck with that."

Gene Dolgoff: After years of research and development, we have developed technology which converts two dimensional video to 3D. It was a series of different technologies we had ot develop and apply for patents on, and now that we have it, we're working on a prototype. I was doing that until 1995.

What you really need is a VP of Marketing and Customer Development, who can help with lead generation and honing the message, rather than an executive to manage a sales team and existing customers. If your business is managing contracts and patents, it makes sense, but the CLO for most startups is LegalZoom on the Internet.
