From apps to hardware, to KickStarter successes and international startups, we’re inching closer to finding out who will take home the title of Startup of the Year competition at our annual Celebrate Conference in October. Among the dozens of participants that applied for the online competitions, only a few progressed into the semifinals.

I’m very pleased today to announce that I invested, on behalf of GRP Partners, in Burstly alongside Rincon Venture Partners , an early stage VC in Southern California whith whom we love to work (and were our co-investors on RingRevenue ). Naturally I’m excited about this investment or I wouldn’t have done it.

I ended up going to Harvard for college, and worked at JP Morgan in investment banking, and went to Harvard Law School. I know that because we were in the print industry, it was important to diversify and to be competitive in the digital age. Was it difficult going from print to mobile application development?

As we learned from our investment in Overture and the subsequent success of Google, “intent-based&# advertising is enormously powerful. A healthy eco-system of application developers is required for any software or Internet company to be massively successful. If we continue our success we will have strong competition.

Looking ahead at the next decade I am excited by what I believe will be viewed as one of the best and most rational investment periods for venture capital due to seven discrete factors: 1. Yes, it’s true that FOMO (fear of missing out) is driving some irrational behavior and valuations amongst uber competitive deals and well-financed VCs.
