For those who still might be wondering what Spotlight: LA Tech is all about, It’s a screening room for new technology homegrown in our region. It’s a gathering of friends and tech enthusiasts of all stripes. This Spotlight takes place Thursday, July 14, at The California Institute of Technology (CalTech).

Next week is the Montgomery Summit (www.montgomerysummit.com), one of the longest running technology conferences held in Los Angeles. It's now an internationally recognized showcase for technology here in Los Angeles, and we also get to showcase Southern California companies, as well. We've seen some notable successes.

As much as the idea of "Silicon Beach" wants to represent the whole of the local technology industry in Los Angeles, there are -- as one would expect in such a large metropolitan area -- many different neighborhoods and communities spread across the region, all with their own individual identities, companies, and technology focuses.

Those are faculty members who have a commercialization idea and want help with that. There are 9 innovation nodes in the US associated with I-Corp, and one of those nodes is out of the Viterbi School of Engineering, with UCLA and Caltech partners in that. What we do, is regional customer discovery for teams, typically academic.

Earlier this month, Azusa-based CFX Battery , a stealthy battery technology spinout from Caltech, announced it had raised a new round of funding worth $14.2M. This week, the firm announced that it was renaming itself Contour Energy (www.contourenergy.com)--and said it was ready to talk about what its battery technology is all about.

He then went on to teach Computer Science at Cornell, Caltech, and University of Pennsylvania. Through his research he helped bring ARPANET to Philadelphia in 1973. In the early 80’s he left academia to work on venture capital investing with Jim Simons, Renaissance Technologies. They have sixteen people on staff.
