He eventually founded and sold consumer health firm ViSalus to a public company and is now back making investments, in technology companies, as a venture capitalist here at Los Angeles-based HashtagOne (www.hashtagone.com). I'm a bit of an anti-VC, as you know. It was really the same business, but with less capital.

ZestCash, founded by Douglas Merrill, former CIO of Google [Hollywood]. Think about venture capital. Those that were around 30+ years ago never had to think about branding – there were hardly any other VCs. So many had names of partners (Kleiner Perkins) or local favorite identifiers like trees (Sequoia).

Funding is different – In Silicon Valley you have mega venture capital funds and many of them. So if you’re out to create content businesses there is no better time and no better place than here. Douglas Merrill, the former CIO of Google, is building his next company in LA. And still much work to be done.
