Open-Source Software & Horizontal Computing. It was driven by the introduction of open-source software, most notably what was called the LAMP stack. These two trends had a major impact on the computing industry from 2000-2005 but the effects weren’t yet felt by the VC industry. Not Google. This is mind boggling.

Some other points - LAMP,Net, Java - doesn't make much difference. Google App Engine - take more than two seconds to process we are going to kill your request. Must be willing to work the way Google expects. Building on top of Amazon or Google - cost base is so much lower. Large number of Players in Cloud Computing.
