Allocate time for active participation in relevant outside industry conferences, and public panels or TED talks that look ahead. Foster an image of open mind and learn mode.

It takes effort and homework to find productive relationship channels, such as industry conferences, connections to experts, and key customer relationships. Inside the organization, it also pays to offer some of your time for coaching and mentoring to less experienced team members, as an entrée to a supportive relationship.

These days, even with the pervasive Internet and social media, it still takes time and money for your marketing and customer communication efforts to have an impact. The reality is that building a business always takes longer than anticipated, so don’t quit your “day job” until revenue is flowing.

You need them not only to close business, but also to keep internal productivity and motivation high, and to use their own social media and friends to spread the word. Facilitate participation in industry conferences and networking. Provide cross-functional mentoring and coaching.

We have three main components: education, mentoring, and practice. In mentoring, we match experienced angel investors with, what I like to call them, “angels-in-training” so they can share the lessons learned. I know several women who have been mentoring entrepreneurs and I encourage them to step up to the plate.
