Even the simplest of new technologies, such as Zoom for remote meetings, can be a detriment to work satisfaction if workers are not trained on how to use it effectively, causing video and sound problems, as well as background distractions. Spend more time mentoring and coaching your team. Giving orders and assignments is not coaching.

The first session we had was a company training session in sexual harassment and misconduct in which we had an outside speaker talk about what is appropriate and what is not. The idea was that if any head coaching position was open the owner had to commit to interviewing at least one person from an underrepresented background.

I started as a teenager, and I did babysitting, life guarding, and swim coaching. Our competitors don't offer screening, but there's a great demand for on-demand childcare from a reliable source, so people are seeking us out. Plus, we have face to face interaction with our sitters, in addition to background screening.

We'll talk more about that, but what we do is bring the data cloud to life through licensed professional coaches, who understand the incentives of behavior change, and meet participants where they are, through three or four occasional recommendations each month. It's all about the app, or the computer screen, or the data.

At a recent accelerator event on the West Side, a friendly young founder told me that he had been coached by his mentor not to talk to Angel groups. The entrepreneurs in startups are trained to go fast and run lean. As a Pasadena Angel, I wanted to be shocked, but I wasn’t. The Angel funding process can be arduous.

It is never as rewarding when you’re the coach (but coaching has many other benefits. They had a team trained up in Documentum and we certainly had enemies from the inside. Something happened and it was clear to me that this IE issues was just a smoke screen. But we worked the account tirelessly for months.
